What is biography Text?

A biography is a text written about someone else's life (usually someone famous). An autobiography is a text written about one's own life.

Social Function of Biography

• To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this person may be known for.
• To give many information easily and educate the readers.

Characteristics of Biography

• Biography Is not written by subject and always written in third person.
• Based on research.
• Describes the person’s surroundings (where, when and how the person lived).
• Use vivid language to narrate events.

Generic Structure:

Orientation (introduction)

It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person

Events

In events, should be chronological order.

Re-orientation (closing)

It consists of conclusion or a comment or the writer. Tell about the echievement or the contribution of the person.

Biography of Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. After uploading a series of his cover versions to various video-sharing sites (beginning with the now-defunct application Vine in 2012), Mendes earned a dedicated following that he cultivated through social media outlets. His talent, teen-idol good looks and built-in fan base quickly landed him a record deal. In 2014, his debut single, "Life of the Party,” charted at No. 24 on the Billboard 100, making the then 15-year-old Mendes the youngest artist to have a debut song in the Top 25.

Although he has been dubbed “the next Justin Bieber,” his acoustic-driven and catchy songs are more aligned with his idol Ed Sheeran’s musical style, and Mendes quickly transitioned to writing his own songs. His loyal fans (of mostly tween and teenage girls) have supported his platinum-selling hits, as well as arena-size world tours, both as an opening act for Taylor Swift and as a headliner.

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Toronto, Canada to Karen and Manuel Mendes. He and his younger sister, Aaliyah, grew up in Pickering, Ontario, a Toronto suburb, where he went to Pine Ridge Secondary School. Among his extracurricular activities, he played sports like soccer and ice hockey and also took acting classes. Though he left school in his junior year to go on tour, he kept up with his homework via online courses and was able to graduate with his class in June 2016.

Vine was a six-and-a-half-second video-sharing service that launched in June 2012. That August, a then 14-year-old Mendes decided to show off his talents by uploading a video of himself singing Bieber’s “As Long as You Love Me” — acoustic style. When he checked his account the next day, he discovered he had accrued a whopping 10,000 likes.

Biography Thomas Alpha Edison

Thomas Edison, in full Thomas Alva Edison, (born February 11, 1847, Milan, Ohio, U.S.—died October 18, 1931, West Orange, New Jersey), American inventor who, singly or jointly, held a world-record 1,093 patents. In addition, he created the world’s first industrial research laboratory.

Edison was the quintessential American inventor in the era of Yankee ingenuity. He began his career in 1863, in the adolescence of the telegraph industry, when virtually the only source of electricity was primitive batteries putting out a low-voltage current. Before he died, in 1931, he had played a critical role in introducing the modern age of electricity. From his laboratories and workshops emanated the phonograph, the carbon-button transmitter for the telephone speaker and microphone, the incandescent lamp, a revolutionary generator of unprecedented efficiency, the first commercial electric light and power system, an experimental electric railroad, and key elements of motion-picture apparatus, as well as a host of other inventions.

Edison was the seventh and last child—the fourth surviving—of Samuel Edison, Jr., and Nancy Elliot Edison. At an early age he developed hearing problems, which have been variously attributed but were most likely due to a familial tendency to mastoiditis. Whatever the cause, Edison’s deafness strongly influenced his behaviour and career, providing the motivation for many of his inventions.

Definition of Descriptive Text

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

Purpose of Descriptive text

• To describe person, thing or place in specific.
• To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Language Feature of Descriptive 

1. Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim.
2. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.
3. The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.
4. Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall sounds unfamiliar for either local or foreign tourists. Lembah Pelangi Waterfall is located in Sukamaju village, Ulubelu sub district, Tanggamus district, Lampung province, Indonesia. The access to this place is quite difficult because Ulu Belu sub district is a remote area in Lampung with its hilly contours which make this tourist spot elusive.

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall has two levels where the waterfall on the second level has two branches. The height of the first level waterfall is about 100 meters, while the second level waterfall is about dozens of meters. The best enchantment of this waterfall is the rainbow which appears between the valley and the waterfall as the name suggests. The soft flowing gurgling waterfall sounds is like a chant of nature which can remove the tiredness of the long trip to go there.

Under the waterfall, there are several spots of warm water which can be an interesting spot for bathing. In this place, you will be shown a panorama of natural beauty which is very interesting for every pair of eyes seeing it. Rocky hills accompanied by leafy trees will actually soothe both your eyes.

Pink Beach (Pantai Merah Muda)

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo

island, East Nusa Tenggara. The beach is called Pink Beach because

the sand beach is pink.

The pink color of its beach is a mixture of white sand beach colors

mixed with crushed coral, shells, calcium carbonate from marine

invertebrates that are very small, and also Foraminifera, microscopic

amoeba that has a red body shell.

At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than

1,000 species of fish, 260 species of coral, and 70 species of sponge

can be found here. Having so much marine life, this place is a proper

spot for snorkeling and diving for sea sports lovers.

 explain about Procedure Text

What is the procedure text?

Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps. The communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps. There are three generic structures in the procedure text. The first is goals or purposes. The second is the materials or tools. The third and the last are steps or methods. To know the text that we read is a procedure or not is so simple. You can read the title if the title is started with ‘how to make…’ or ‘how to use…’ it can be certainly defined that the text is procedure text.

Definition of Procedure Text

There are three definitions of procedure text :

1. Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction/operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
2. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules.
3. Texts that deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how to succeed

Purpose of Procedure Text

1. To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps.
2. To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something

Language Feature of Procedure Text

• Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
• Use command / imperative sentence (e.g: put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes.
• Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurately, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
• Using action verbs, e.g: make, take, boil, cook
• Using Simple Present Tense

How To Use Mask

STEPS:

1. Open: Before you wear a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based sanitizer or soap and water. Then, open the package. Make sure the mask is intact and the colored side is facing outwards.
2. Wear: Place the loops over your ears. Secure the metal edge on your nose bridge. Extend the mask to fully cover your nose, mouth, and chin.
3. Pinch: Pinch the metal edge of the mask gently. So it will press firmly on your nose bridge.
