The definition of narrative text

An exposition text is a text whose structure is short, concise and clear.

So, what is the purpose of this text? The purpose of the exposition text is to provide information so that it can add to the reader’s knowledge. Readers are expected to add precise, detailed, and clear knowledge of things and events.

• Narrative text is a story with complication or problematic events and it tries to find the resolutions to solve the problems. An important part of narrative text is the narrative mode, the set of methods used to communicate the narrative through a process narration.

The purpose of narrative text

• The Purpose of Narrative Text is to amuse or to entertain the reader with a story.

Generic Structures of Narrative Text

1) Orientation

Sets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.

2) Complication

Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants.

3) Resolution

The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending

4) Re-orientation/Coda

This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It consists of a moral lesson, advice or teaching from the writer

A Boy Who Cried Wolf

In a village, lived a carefree boy with his father. The boy’s father told him that he was old enough to watch over the sheep while they graze in the fields. Every day, he had to take the sheep to the grassy fields and watch them as they graze.

However, the boy was unhappy and didn’t want to take the sheep to the fields. He wanted to run and play, not watch the boring sheep graze in the field. So, he decided to have some fun. He cried, “Wolf! Wolf!” until the entire village came running with stones to chase away the wolf before it could eat any of the sheep.

When the villagers saw that there was no wolf, they left muttering under their breath about how the boy had wasted their time. The next day, the boy cried once more, “Wolf! Wolf!” and, again, the villagers rushed there to chase the wolf away.

The boy laughed at the fright he had caused. This time, the villagers left angrily. The third day, as the boy went up the small hill, he suddenly saw a wolf attacking his sheep. He cried as hard as he could, “Wolf! Wolf! Wolf!”, but not a single villager came to help him.

The villagers thought that he was trying to fool them again and did not come to rescue him or his sheep. The little boy lost many sheep that day, all because of his foolishness.

What Is a Song?

There is probably not a human on earth who does not at least have some sort of vague idea of what a song is. Songs have surrounded humanity for millennia and have served as a way of expressing feelings, wants, hopes, and desires in a melodic way. A song is defined as a set of words or short poems meant to be sung and set to a certain type of music.

Songs consist of many different components: lyrics, verses, refrain, and meter. Lyrics are a group of words that make up a song and are usually broken up into verses. Verses are a grouped portion of a song, which can also be found in poetry. The refrain of a song is the repeated part, usually broken up throughout the song. The meter is the measurement of regularly occurring beats or bars. Songs can have one single verse or many verses and refrains.

Songs are written in a multitude of ways. They can be used as an expression of emotion, such as in love songs dedicated to a certain individual. They can be used as a way of telling a story, as one would find in a song depicting the events of one's childhood. They can even be used as a way of advertising certain products. Songs can have an impact in ways the spoken word simply cannot, which is why they are often used in certain situations.

Types of Song:

One of the oldest songs in the world was traced back to Syria in around 1400 B.C. Since then, the world has connected through sharing songs from each culture's history. For centuries, songs have been created in countless types of genres. There are folk songs, sea shanties, art songs, lute songs, and more.

1. Folk Songs

Throughout the history of songs, there have not always been opportunities for written lyrics or sheet music. When songs are passed down orally from one generation to another, the style of song is generally referred to as a folk song. Sometimes referred to as traditional songs, folk songs reflect the activities of common people and their lives. At times, folk songs would exist for decades before music scholars or later composers would write them down.

2. Sea Shanties

Sea shanties are another style of song. Sea shanties differ from emotional and heartfelt songs in that they were used in the workplace. They were historically used on sailing ships and consisted of different types of work songs. This helped workers pass time as they completed often laborious and tedious tasks. The rhythm of the song was repetitive and tailored to coordination for tasks. It helped sailors to work in rhythm for hard jobs such as pulling anchors and ropes or taking down and putting up sails.

What is Exposition Text

An exposition text is a text whose structure is short, concise and clear.

Exposition Text Structure

Above we have explained briefly that this text is composed of three elements, namely a statement of opinion, argumentation, and repetition of opinion statements. Below we explain in more detail.

• First: Statement of opinion (thesis). This is the section containing the author’s opinion, and is located at the beginning of the text.
• Second: Argument, this is the part that contains and contains reasons or arguments in strengthening the writer’s writing which is aimed at accepting an idea or rejecting.
• Third: Reiteration of opinion (reiteration). This is a section that reaffirms the author’s opinion.

Characteristics of Exposition Text

• The text contains an explanation of knowledge or knowledge information
• His writing style is inviting
• This text usually answers questions in the form of what, when, who, where, how and why.

Colon Cancer Awareness Must Start Early For African Americans

 March was officially dedicated as National Colon Cancer Awareness Month in February 2000 by President Bill Clinton. Since then, the month has been recognized as a time to particularly draw attention to the need for awareness-raising, screening, and prevention of colon cancer. Colon and rectal cancer are the 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States. The American Cancer Society, estimates that this year alone, 136,830 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and of those diagnosed, 50,310 will die from the disease.

Although these numbers may seem high, they are decreasing as the incidence and mortality of colon and rectal cancer is decreasing – in large part due to greater awareness of the disease and increased screening. However, the decline in incidence and mortality occurred much more slowly for the African-American population. African Americans tend to have the highest mortality rates and lowest survival rates when compared to all other racial groups.

Colorectal cancer rates are 25 percent higher and death rates are 50 percent higher in African Americans than Caucasians. African Americans are also more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease. These findings have been associated with lower screening rates in minorities, later disease stage at presentation and reduced access to health care.

The average lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is about one in 20 (5%). The exact cause of colon and rectal cancer is unknown but there are several risk factors that are thought to be associated with its development.

Genetics, age over 50 years, family history of colon cancer and colon polyps, obesity, sedentary lifestyle and smoking are some of the risk factors identified. Diets high in red meat and fat and low in fiber, calcium and folate have also been thought to be linked to the development of colon cancer. Colonoscopy is the most widely used tool to screen for colon cancer. It is the only modality to date that can screen and treat patients with the identification and subsequent removal of colon and rectal polyps. Polyps can be hyperplastic (benign) or adenomatous (pre-cancerous). These are fleshy growths in the inner lining of the colon that can become cancerous. Cancer begins when cells in the body start to grow out of control. The goal of screening colonoscopy is to detect and remove these polyps before they become cancerous.

The question that often arises is who should be screened and when? Current guidelines from several medical societies recommend screening average-risk people without symptoms at age 50. In 2005, The American College of Gastroenterology published new guidelines for screening African Americans for colorectal cancer starting at age 45 because of differences in incidence and survival.

Some of the reasons for the health disparity may be due to lack of public knowledge about the benefits of screening, limited access to health care and insurance as well as fear, mistrust and anxiety about testing and the health care system. Doctors may not be aware of adjusted guidelines and may have discordant recommendations for screening.

With proper screening and lifestyle adjustments, the incidence of colon cancer can be significantly reduced. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends at least 30 minutes a day of moderate activity for cancer prevention. Diets high in fiber, fruit and vegetables have been thought to have a protective effect. Fighting obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are also ways to help fight cancer. Talking to family and friends about their risk and the need for screening as well as community outreach and education programs, along with regularly scheduled doctor checkups and colon cancer screening can go a long way in preventing colon cancer. If found early enough, colon cancer can be effectively treated and cured.

What is biography Text?

A biography is a text written about someone else's life (usually someone famous). An autobiography is a text written about one's own life.

Social Function of Biography

• To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this person may be known for.
• To give many information easily and educate the readers.

Characteristics of Biography

• Biography Is not written by subject and always written in third person.
• Based on research.
• Describes the person’s surroundings (where, when and how the person lived).
• Use vivid language to narrate events.

Generic Structure:

Orientation (introduction)

It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person

Events

In events, should be chronological order.

Re-orientation (closing)

It consists of conclusion or a comment or the writer. Tell about the echievement or the contribution of the person.

Biography of Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. Biography Thomas Alpha Edison

Thomas Edison, in full Thomas Alva Edison, (born February 11, 1847, Milan, Ohio, U.S.—died October 18, 1931, West Orange, New Jersey), American inventor who, singly or jointly, held a world-record 1,093 patents. In addition, he created the world’s first industrial research laboratory.

Edison was the quintessential American inventor in the era of Yankee ingenuity. He began his career in 1863, in the adolescence of the telegraph industry, when virtually the only source of electricity was primitive batteries putting out a low-voltage current. Before he died, in 1931, he had played a critical role in introducing the modern age of electricity. From his laboratories and workshops emanated the phonograph, the carbon-button transmitter for the telephone speaker and microphone, the incandescent lamp, a revolutionary generator of unprecedented efficiency, the first commercial electric light and power system, an experimental electric railroad, and key elements of motion-picture apparatus, as well as a host of other inventions.

Edison was the seventh and last child—the fourth surviving—of Samuel Edison, Jr., and Nancy Elliot Edison. At an early age he developed hearing problems, which have been variously attributed but were most likely due to a familial tendency to mastoiditis. Whatever the cause, Edison’s deafness strongly influenced his behaviour and career, providing the motivation for many of his inventions.

Definition of Descriptive Text

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

Purpose of Descriptive text

• To describe person, thing or place in specific.
• To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Language Feature of Descriptive 

1. Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim.
2. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.
3. The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.
4. Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall sounds unfamiliar for either local or foreign tourists. Lembah Pelangi Waterfall is located in Sukamaju village, Ulubelu sub district, Tanggamus district, Lampung province, Indonesia. The access to this place is quite difficult because Ulu Belu sub district is a remote area in Lampung with its hilly contours which make this tourist spot elusive.

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall has two levels where the waterfall on the second level has two branches. The height of the first level waterfall is about 100 meters, while the second level waterfall is about dozens of meters. The best enchantment of this waterfall is the rainbow which appears between the valley and the waterfall as the name suggests. The soft flowing gurgling waterfall sounds is like a chant of nature which can remove the tiredness of the long trip to go there.

Under the waterfall, there are several spots of warm water which can be an interesting spot for bathing. In this place, you will be shown a panorama of natural beauty which is very interesting for every pair of eyes seeing it. Rocky hills accompanied by leafy trees will actually soothe both your eyes.

Pink Beach (Pantai Merah Muda)

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo

island, East Nusa Tenggara. The beach is called Pink Beach because

the sand beach is pink.

The pink color of its beach is a mixture of white sand beach colors

mixed with crushed coral, shells, calcium carbonate from marine

invertebrates that are very small, and also Foraminifera, microscopic

amoeba that has a red body shell.

At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than

1,000 species of fish, 260 species of coral, and 70 species of sponge

can be found here. Having so much marine life, this place is a proper

spot for snorkeling and diving for sea sports lovers.
