Definition of News Item

News item text is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or important. It means if there is an important event that should be known by many people, then this event deserves news. Well, the news text is called the news item text. However, if there are events that people do not deserve, then they are not definitely worth to be news.

Purpose of News Item

1. News Item Text is used to inform readers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important.
2. To inform the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day
3. To present information the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day

Language Feature of News Item

• Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the text)
• Using saying verbs: “….”, She said, informed, told, reported.
• Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene is mentioned : Jakarta – … .. / Kuala Lumpur – …
• Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that until now still happen or still in the form of fact, then can use simple present tense.
• Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline
• Using adverbs: time, place and manner.
• Uses of material processes to retell the event

What is an Explanation Text?

An Explanation text is a piece of non-fiction writing explaining an action process or event in a detailed but simple way. It features numbered points, time connectives, pictures, diagrams, labels and captions to help the receiver understand the process of what’s being delivered.

What are the Key Features of an Explanation Text?

• Explanation text is typically written in the present tense with formal to-the-point language that doesn’t deviate from the topic.
• It uses separate text with headings and subheadings to make the explanation text simple and easy to understand.
• Add pictures and diagrams with labels for visual learners.
• Any technical vocabulary used should fit into a glossary at the end to help with jargon.
• Numbered points that explain something step-by-step.

How can I use explanation text examples to support students’ writing?

You can use explanation text examples within the classroom to support the following:

• For text analysis where children search for genre features.
• To support teachers and staff in their knowledge and understanding of the 2014 English National Curriculum objectives.
• As a high-quality example for children to aim for in their writing.
• Children are able to see how language devices can work in the content of a complete text.
• For SLT or English subject leaders to develop a portfolio of exemplar texts.

What’s the difference between an information text and an explanation text?

• Instructional text is sequencing an event, action or process by telling someone what to do. See above for an example.
• Explanation text describes something non-fiction, it typically explains 'why' we do something as well as the full process.

What does "Caption" mean?

• A caption is a short text above or below an image in a book, magazine, or newspaper that describes the image or explains what the person in it did or said.

Function of Caption :

• Captions have a social function, namely to provide basic information about an object.

Caption writing structure :

• Opening : The opening is usually written in a larger size to attract the attention of the reader.
• Content : Content (content) contains concise information to explain the image.
• Closing : The closing part is usually in the form of additional information that has not been conveyed in the content.

What is an aplication letter?

• Also known as a cover letter, an application letter is a summary of your strongest and most relevant skills and abilities that will be expanded in your resume or selection criteria. It introduces you to potential employers and highlights your suitability for the position you are applying for.
• All written applications should include an application letter. In many cases, your application letter is just as important as your resume. It is unlikely that your resume will be read if your application letter doesn't make a good first impression.

An aplication letter should :

• Be professional in appearance.
• Be tailored to the job under application.
• Be addressed to a specific person (only use  Dear Sir/Madam if you're unable to find out the appropriate person's name).
• Include your reason for writing.
• Demonstrate your interest in and knowledge of the organisation.

An aplication letter should not :

• Be generic.
• Apologise for qualities, qualifications or experience you don't have - emphasise what you do.
• Repeat exactly what is in the resume.
• Be copied from resume publications - employers do recognise them!
• Focus on what you expect to gain from the organisation - include what the organisation will gain from you.
• Include unsupported claims about your skills.

An aplication letter can be structured into 3 parts :

1. Introduction :

The beginning of your application letter should include:

• The position you are applying for.
• Where you saw the job advertisement.
• A sentence or 2 about why you think you are a great fit for the role and the organisation.

2. Body : 

• The body of the application letter is where you 'sell yourself. It should address the key requirements stated in the job ad, describing how you have the required qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience.
• Identify keywords, phrases and skills mentioned in the ad and focus on emphasising your strengths in these areas. It isn't necessary to include everything mentioned in the job ad. Instead, focus on three to five of the most important elements.

3. Conclution :

At the end of the letter :

• Refer to any attached documentation, including your resume.
• Express interest in further discussing your application and the available position in an interview.
• Indicate your availability for an interview and your contact details.
• Sign off with with 'Yours sincerely' (or 'Yours faithfully' if you addressed the application to Dear Sir/Madam).
